What is Power Yoga?

Power yoga is a form of yoga which has several unique and important differences from the rest; for instance, power yoga focuses more on that of the vinyasa, of which the purpose is to create heat in the body, and this which then leads to a purification of the body through that of increased circulation and sweating. As well, power yoga is also used to increase stamina and strength, and to improve flexibility.

There are basically six series involved in the act of power yoga, and these involve that of three topics in particular: bandhas, drishtis, and mantras. There are three bandhas of which are prescribed in the various different postures, and what the bandha is, is basically a sustained contraction of a particular group of muscles, of which assist the participant in retaining a pose as well as moving in and out of it into other positions.

In regards to the drishtis, there are nine of these which instruct the participant in directing their gaze, and these are: Angusta ma dyai, which means to the thumb; Broomadyha, which means to the third eye, or in other words between the eyebrows; Nasagrai, which means at a point six inches from the nose; Hastagrai, which means to the palm; Parsva, which means to the left side; Parsva, which means to the right side; Urdhva, which means to the sky; Nabichakra, which means to the navel; and Padayoragrai, which means to the toes.

Then there are the mantras which are used in power yoga, and the beginning of the practice is begun with:  vande gurunam charanaravinde sandarshita svatma sukhava bodhe nih shreyase jangalikayamane samsara halahala mohasantyai abahu purusharakam sankhachakrasi dharinam sahasra shirsam svetam pranamami patanjalim . Then there is the closing mantra, which is as follows:  svasti prajabyah paripalayantam nyayena margena mahim mahishah gobrahmanebyah shubamashtu nityam lokasamasta sukhinobavantu.
